Best Writing! Illiteracy is No Barrier

My Name is Lama Zeinoun Tabet. I am a 36 years old woman living in Beirut, Lebanon.

In 2007, I worked as a Trainer in the “WEPASS project” by UNFPA and Lebanese National Commission for Women. The objective of the project was Women Empowerment and it was implemented in 10 Lebanese villages in South Lebanon and Bekaa.

I was asked to develop and implement training sessions on “Household Budgeting” to the villages’ women. The program was going on well, I did 3 workshops in every village and women were able to understand the concepts of variable and fixed revenue, variable and fixed expenses, income etc…. They acquired the skills to build a budget and maintain it. I was satisfied with my work till we reached a village where the women who were supposed to show up did not come and instead came a group of illiterate women. The first day we visited them, we were not able to do any of the workshops because these women did not know how to read or write. I felt helpless. All the books and resources I had were powerless in front of this group of women who were illiterate but very determined to learn. The asked us to do something. They all worked with their husbands in the fields, growing crops and also at home. They wanted to learn and insisted.

Doorway into Light

Doorway into Light

Writing a new page in history. Everything suddenly becomes possible in the Arab world and the Middle East. We are witnessing the dawn of a new era to which all democrats aspire.

We have reached a turning point; it is clear now that dictators can be peacefully overthrown. To do so it only needs courage, a mass movement, determination, hope and above all faith in God and faith in the future. Crushed by repression, the people have stood up to claim full human dignity and their irrepressible right to be free. I still remember the morning of Jan 25th when-for the first time in my life- I joined a protest with hundreds of peoples, inspired by the Tunisians chanting "People demand removal of the regime". I still smell the tear gas in my nose and feel it in my eyes. I still remember that Christian guy who took the bullets while protecting his Muslim brothers who were praying.  And I will always remember the faces of those few brave who died donating their blood for Egypt giving their country a new chance to live.

Strong lobbying for an African to head IMF.

The departure of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director has presented prime opportunity for African countries to head the global financial institution.

African countries are urging their   developed counterparts to o deliver on their commitment to implement major reforms at the IMF, including those relating to governance, by appointing an African to replace the beleaguered Frenchman.
